Predicting the future of technology with SoundCloud as an example.
A bet with Vincent Garrigues where I chose a conservative opinion that in four years (2023) most serious musicians will continue to use desktop for music production rather than mobile phones. The bet was worded to specifically address whether the amount of mobile uploads will beat the amount of desktop uploads on SoundCloud by November of 2023, with me betting on "No". The bet is important as an example of our usually poor ability to imagine and predict how technology will shape the future.
The bet was won by Louigi. Although by this time none of us worked at SoundCloud, it was clear based on indirect data that the capabilities of even top mobile DAWs in 2023 were nowhere near their desktop counterparts.
